The first hyperpolarizability or first order hyperpolarizability β or molecular first polarizability is a measure of how easily a dipole is induced in a molecule in the presence of an electric field. β is the first derivative of polarizability with respect to field.

This property contributes to R33 the electro-optic coefficient for a whole material.
