An optical parametric amplifier divides photons from a pump beam into two photons (signal and idler) with half of the energy of the pump using a non linear optical crystal. The wavelength can be tuned by changing the angle of the crystal. The signal can also then be amplified using a second NLO crystal and the residual pump beam.
